  • Drugs and Young People – 2011 – a two page briefing paper on the trends in prevalence and attitudes towards drugs and alcohol amongst young people and young adults.

Literature Reviews

Mentor has commissioned and undertaken a number of literature reviews in order to inform policy and practice.

  • Drug Prevention in Schools: What is the Evidence? 
    This 2011 paper reviews the current international research evidence on the impact of drug prevention programmes in schools, including the factors associated with successes, the evidence on cost-effectiveness and the practicalities of implementation.
  • Drug Prevention in Colleges and Universities – Literature Review
    Published in 2007 this paper reviews the evidence around the harm that alcohol and/or drugs cause among further education college and university students in the UK and examines the effectiveness of drug prevention in these settings.
  • Grandparents in Custodial Care of their Grandchildren
    Carried out in 2005 as part of a wider project to explore and try to meet the needs of grandparent carers and the children in their care, this review focuses on grandparents in fulltime care of their grandchildren including research related to the physical, mental and social health of custodial grandparents, the challenges presented by children and adolescents raised by grandparents and research on positive interventions.
  • Coastal and Ex-Mining Areas
    Carried out in 2005 to support a project to trial evidence based prevention approaches in coastal and ex-mining areas, review of literature sets the scene for the project, outlining the geography of deprivation in England and the risk factors associated with substance abuse among young people.
  • Drug Prevention for Young Asylum Seekers and Refugees
    Published in 2005 this paper includes a literature review summarising the evidence in relation to young asylum seekers, refugees and drug use; an overview of the provision for asylum seekers and refugees at risk of substance misuse at the time and an identification of gaps in our knowledge about asylum seekers, refugees and substance misuse.
