Current Projects

Kinship Carers

Across the UK there are thousands of children and young people being cared for by family members. Recent estimates suggest that nearly half of kinship carers are looking after children because of the drug and alcohol problems of their parents. It is for this reason Mentor has led a number of projects that have explored how to support kinship carers, and the children in their care. Over the past three years we have been working with kinship carers in Scotland to understand their needs and to offer practical help. Peer Education Alcohol Project

Mentor Scotland’s two-year Peer Education Alcohol project proved that peer education is an effective way of changing young people’s attitudes to alcohol. The Peer Alcohol Education Project is delivered across Scotland to young people at serious risk of alcohol misuse. 12 young people aged 14 – 16 years were recruited to become peer educators. Over a series of leisure activities and residential weekends, they devised an alcohol education programme focusing on the effects on mind and body.

Planned Projects

Breaking Out

A 3-year project to reduce risky behaviours and harms caused by alcohol amongst young offenders. We will support offenders at HM Polmont to develop and run 3-month peer-led programmes to enhance and improve resilience, practical and personal skills, and reengage them in family, community and national life.

The project is waiting till end March to hear back from potential funders.

Families Together.

Working with 60 Kinship Carers and 120 children over three years we will address relationship issues, provide respite, develop parenting skills and resolve behaviour difficulties. We shall be working in Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian.

The project is waiting till early March to hear back from potential funders.

Mentor Scotland’s patron Greg McHugh, aka Gary: Tank Commander, took time out of filming a new series for Channel 4 to host an open session with young people about becoming peer educators.
